I can appreciate how strange and unwieldy it looks now. In other words, you had to be there at the time and have a sense of what was going to happen, good and bad, and ugly. Punch cards were still all the rage, magnetic tape was still the king of data, video, and audio, and a personal live data terminal inside a residence was about as common as an outhouse in the land of ceramic toilets. The Shockwave Rider illustrates what Stand On Zanzibar was saying in a much simpler, more personal, manner. The Sheep Look Up dishes up a much more paranoid, sinister, caustic version of how wrong things could go as presented in Stand On Zanzibar and The Shockwave Rider. I really liked the vibe at Worldcon, very informal and not at all like the commercial cons. You could spot the guests of honor enjoying the con with all the other fans and it all felt very informal and welcoming. Somebody said that Worldcon isn't drawing that many younger fans in the States as it did here. I wonder if they all go to the more commercial events like Comic-Con and Dragoncon? One difference is that Worldcon focuses mostly on the authors, not TV series and actors etc. and it's run by fandom volunteers. Maybe that contributes to the atmosphere? In Finland the fandom also hasn't separated into subgroups as much; if you like science fiction and fantasy, chances are you're also into anime and boardgaming. I love the geek community in Finland. You can be yourself and nobody will judge you. curiousthingshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07600806228177309511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6109330298373881994.post-49058820500039057772017-08-19T02:12:26.082+03:002017-08-19T02:12:26.082+03:00Thank you for giving a view into a world con. I do...Thank you for giving a view into a world con. I don't think I have ever read an "I was there" account before. I have only been to cons so small you could attend all the panels (but not little author things)

In my province (state) one of the Japanese conventions restricts the numbers of people allowed to view anime, because they use classrooms, so I only went once. Another con used to use the university lecture theatres for their anime (ample room) which I enjoyed for years. Unfortunately, they switched to a convention centre, with level seating and no permission to lean on the walls or sit on the floor, so I won't be back.

Come to think of it, the sf and f con for western North America also had enough room at the panels. That was wester-con. I remember San Jose was trying to get voted to host the next wester-con. Their campaign used a garden gnome and do you gnome the way to San Jose. (The song is an oldie but goodie, one that I occasionally sing)

I am writing more than I usually would because I don't expect you to have the time to read for quite some time, and when you do, then you might like something to read.Sean Crawfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13724844971087639706noreply@blogger.com
